Daang Vikas Sansthan is a dedicated non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to improving the lives of silicosis victims, primarily through access to healthcare, legal aid, and social empowerment. Since its inception in 2005, Daang Vikas Sansthan has been working relentlessly to uplift silicosis victims—particularly mine workers, stone carving laborers, and families affected by this deadly occupational disease.
Our Mission
We aim to address the plight of the poorest of the poor—those working in hazardous conditions, such as stone quarries and mines, where exposure to silica dust causes silicosis, a fatal lung disease. Our mission is to ensure these workers and their families receive the support they need, including medical treatment, financial assistance, legal aid, and educational empowerment.
Our Journey
Registered under the Society Act on December 26, 2003, Daang Vikas Sansthan has been a beacon of hope for the silicosis-affected communities in Rajasthan since 2005. Our journey began with a deep commitment to alleviating the suffering of those who are at the highest risk of developing silicosis—the mine workers and stone carving artisans.
In 2011-2014, we made a groundbreaking contribution to scientific research, becoming the first to prove the prevalence of silicosis among mine and stone workers in the eastern districts of Rajasthan, in collaboration with the apex scientific institutes of India. This was a pivotal moment, as it shed light on the severity of the issue in these regions.
Our Work
At Daang Vikas Sansthan, we believe that true change can only occur through a multi-pronged approach. Our efforts are organized under four key pillars of democracy: Administration, Legislation, Judiciary, and Media. By advocating for better occupational health standards, we have succeeded in influencing both state policy and public awareness regarding the dangers of silicosis.
One of our significant achievements has been our instrumental role in the creation of the State Pneumoconiosis (Silicosis) Policy, which provides critical protections for workers in the mining and stone industries. We have also succeeded in securing over 1800 crores INR in support from the state government, directly or indirectly benefiting thousands of silicosis victims and their families.
Our advocacy efforts have garnered recognition from some of the highest authorities, including the Rajasthan High Court, the State Human Rights Commission of Rajasthan, and the Late Sir Ratan Tata. These accolades underscore the effectiveness and far-reaching impact of our work.
Impact and Advocacy
Through our tireless work, we have played a major role in protecting over 3 million stone and mine workers in Rajasthan from misdiagnosis, a common issue that exacerbates their suffering. Additionally, we have caused a massive shift in the behavior and awareness levels of mine workers regarding the health hazards they face daily. Our educational programs have empowered workers to recognize the early symptoms of silicosis and take proactive measures to safeguard their health.
We are also committed to providing a voice to the young widows of silicosis victims, who are often justifywithout support or resources after losing their husbands to the disease. Through our programs, we provide them with legal assistance, healthcare, and social empowerment to help rebuild their lives.
Our Vision for the Future
Daang Vikas Sansthan envisions a future where no worker has to suffer in silence or succumb to preventable diseases like silicosis. We are dedicated to continuing our advocacy efforts, raising awareness, and providing comprehensive support to ensure that the rights of mine and stone workers are upheld, and that they are given the tools to lead healthier, more prosperous lives.
Together, with your support, we strive to create a world where every worker can perform their job with dignity and without the fear of fatal health hazards.
